I: Influenza Like Illness

1. Background

            The Communicable Disease Control Department (CDC) of the Ministry of Health (MOH) in collaboration with the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH), Institute Pasteur de Cambodge (IPC), and the World Health Organization (WHO) are conducting surveillance for Influenza-like Illness (ILI) in seven sentinel sites [figure1] to provide information on the epidemiology of ILI in Cambodia, detect ILI outbreaks in sentinel sites, identify circulating strains of influenza viruses, and guide public health interventions.

2. Case Definition of Influenza-like illness (ILI)

            A person presenting with a sudden onset of fever >38^oC (armpit) AND a cough and/or sore throat in the absence of other diagnoses, who presents at clinic/hospital within 5 days from onset of illness

Information (number of cases, age and gender) on ILI cases consulting at the sentinel heath facilities is collected on a weekly basis.

Nasopharyngeal swabs are collected from a maximum of five ILI cases per sentinel site each week. The specimens are tested for influenza viruses.
